What is the minimum age for appearing in UPSC Civil Services Examination?
-
My DOB is 10.08.2000 and I am seriously working hard to give my attempt in 2021,but according to upsc notifications it seems that the candidate should be of 21 by 1st august,2021 if he/she wishes to give prelims. Elsewhere some of my seniors said that you should be of 21 by the time you give mains(if selected). So, my question is am I eligible to give my first attempt in 2021 or not?
Please answer. -
You are 18 now! So, you must be 21 before 1.aug/2021 as per notification of this year... but notification are subject to change and UPSC can change anything in 2021 notification which is quite far! So don't worry and prepare happily!

I will be 21 on 10th aug,2021 which is some 9 days after the threshold time period set by upsc .Since I am planning to join some coaching institution this year that's why I have asked such a silly question.
Could you please help me out with this? -
@Samaira Well I am self -study student! If you want to get started now, see your level of knowledge and please don't get in trap with so called seniors..! First you need to complete syllabus whic you can do from any online institute like following any timetable of insight or forumias or iasbaba or vision t-series! follow any one first!
As per me forumias is damn good in guidance to newbies, but its your own call! Believe on your mind, it guides you much better!
Apart from that, this forum is always there to guide you! -
@Samaira No you are not eligible for 2020 (might not be also for 2021). I might sound negative but upsc will not change minimum age criteria in near future. Assuming that you are in first year of your graduation, then in anyway you can't appear in prelims until you complete your graduation (though last year students can appear for exam provided they get their degree completed before upsc ask for degree certificate). In meantime you should be preparing for upsc during your graduation course but don't neglect graduation for the sake of upsc preparation (assuming that your graduation course is different from the upsc syllabus like engineering). Many toppers selected in their first attempt and at the age of 21 are preparing from their graduation days that's why they clear in first attempt. So best luck and don't bother about trivial things like optional removal etc.

Please answer. If UPSC keeps it's current criteria (which it WILL 99.99%) - you will not be eligible for CSE 2021. 21 years by 1st August of the year of notification is what is the criteria.
By the way advance congratulations for doing your graduation so early. Prepare hard before you appear for CSE prelims. ATB

@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Sir, pls tell regarding the maximum age too...If someone is 32 prior to the notification for that year ,say by 1 august 2019, will they be eligible for that year`s exam ?
-
@g-singh-15201328507 yes. 1st August is cutoff date for both cases.
-
@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Sir, not doubting your awareness but are you sure about this? I am 31 now, going to be 32 (02-10-1987) this year. This is my last attempt, am I eligible to write the exam next year if I skip this year? This has always confused me!
-
@g-singh-15201328507 Hey, I checked the notification, if you are born after August 2nd, 1987, you are eligible for this year, likewise, for next year, you will be eligible if you are born after August 2nd, 1988, else, you are not eligible. Unless UPSC changes rules next year.

Sir for CSE 2019 cutoff date will be 1st August 2019. For CSE 2020 cutoff date will be 1st August 2020. As you are born on 2nd august 1987 so you are eligible for 2019 attempt (saved by 2 days otherwise you would have been eligible only for CSE 2018). BUT not for CSE 2020 as you will be 32.164 days by 1st august 2020. Hope it clears your doubt.

@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Can you please tell if there will be any reduction in maximum age limit next year or not?

Not at all any possibility. It will stand 32 yrs only as of now. Any such change can happen only after 1 2 years of advance notice. That's too after hell lot of petitions. But bad kbhi bhi skti h. Kam nhi ho skti easily.

@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh thank you so much for the clarification
-
@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Sir, does this mean that person who is 32 yrs and few months old on 1st august 2022, will be eligible for giving the exam even though he/she will exceed this age by the time entire process is over?

No. 1st august of 2022 - the person shall be less than 32 years even if by one day short. Then only S/he will be eligible for CSE 2022.
"1st August, XXXX year = cutoff date for CSE XXXX" is the simple rule. You should be 21yr + 1 day or 32 year - 1day to be eligible for that particular year on 1st August.
